Join the campaign. Help us gather the signatures for two ballot initiatives that will dramatically improve patient safety in Massachusetts hospitals, while also ensuring that taxpayer health care dollars are dedicated exclusively for patient care and needed services for all communities.

Last fall, our members and supporters gathered the first round of more than 100,000 signatures that were required to certify these initiatives by the Secretary of State.  To finish the job and place these questions on the ballot in November we are required to gather another 20,000 different signatures from registered voters in Massachusetts prior to June 9.

Here are the materials you need to begin gathering signatures:

The Patient Safety Act (House Bill 3843) will set a safe maximum limit on the number of patients assigned to a nurse at one time, while also providing maximum flexibility to hospitals to adjust nurses' patient assignments based on the specific needs of the patients.

The Hospital Profit Transparency and Fairness Act (House Bill 3844) will require hospitals to be transparent about their financial holdings and will limit and claw back excessive profits and exorbitant CEO compensation to ensure taxpayer dollars are dedicated exclusively to safe patient care and necessary services for all communities in the commonwealth. The rally is a crucial step in the progress toward ensuring the ultimate success of these initiatives and to protecting patients and providing access to health services.

What is a ballot initiative and why are we doing one?
A ballot initiative is a process that empowers the voters to propose legislation and to enact or reject that legislation at the polls. It is a process that is independent of the state Legislature and its lawmaking power, which means that it is a type of election that is commenced and carried out by the people.

The purpose of a ballot initiative is to permit registered voters to resolve questions where their elected representatives have failed or refused to proceed with a change that the public desires.

With these details in mind, MNA members made a motion at last year’s annual convention requesting that a ballot initiative specific to safe patient care get underway. The motion passed overwhelmingly. Why? Because MNA nurses everywhere knew that it was time to take control of their destiny and to stop relying on the Legislature.
