MNA Board of Directors Meeting highlights March 2023

MNA BOARD OF DIRECTORS HIGHLIGHTS
March 15, 2023

➢ There was a great turnout on March 9th for the informational picket at Anna Jaques Hospital in
Newburyport. It is time for management to do whatever is needed to recruit and retain nurses and other
essential staff. This means fixing broken equipment and providing needed supplies in a timely fashion.

➢ We have negotiated an agreement over employment and layoff options for the Brockton Hospital
bargaining unit nurses. The hospital is currently seeking contracts with area hospitals to which nurses
would be deployed pursuant to the agreement.

➢ Good Samaritan reached a tentative agreement last night after members voted 96% to authorize a three
day strike on February 28th. The Heywood Committee has put out a petition for folks to say they have
no confidence in the leadership at the hospital.

➢ Our annual Survey on the State of Nursing in Massachusetts has been completed. Results will be released at the end of March.

➢ The new legislative session opened in January of this year. We have filed twenty bills addressing our
priorities including patient safety and access to care, workplace violence, essential services and more.
The bills have been assigned numbers which can be used when contacting Legislators. Please sign up to
support MNA’s Political Action Committee which makes sure our voices are heard on Beacon Hill.

➢ The BOD voted to endorse Senator Ed Markey’s Green New Deal for Health Act and An Act to
Strengthen Justice and Support for Sex Trade Survivors (HD.3295/SD.2050).

➢ The BOD voted to donate $500 to MassEquality for their Beacon of Light Gala being held on April 29th
in Worcester. MNA will also share information on our social media pages for a Comedy Night on May
5th at Florian Hall starting at 6:00pm. Funds raised will go towards a plaque to honor Ann O’Flaherty, a
nurse at St. Elizabeth’s that was killed in 2021 crossing the street outside the hospital.

➢ Colleen Wolfe was appointed to the vacant labor seat on the Finance Committee.

➢ MNA COMMITTEE VACANCIES: MNA BOD Region 4, two Director At-Large General seats and
Labor Program Member (HCP); Bylaws Committee (Regions 1 and 3); and Nominations & Elections
(Regions 1 and 3). If you are interested in any of these positions, please send in a consent to serve form.

➢ Disparate Care, Disparate Outcomes: How Embedded Bias Affects Maternal Childcare Outcomes.
Live Virtual Continue Education program on Tuesday, April 25th via Zoom.

➢ SAVE THE DATE: The 2023 MNA Convention will be held at the Quincy Marriott on Wednesday and
