Keynote Address


Bullying, Harassment and Horizontal Violence: It's Impact on Professional Nursing Practice and Quality Patient Care
Rosanna DeMarco, PhD, PHCNS-BC, ACRN, FAAN
This program will identify how bullying, harassment and horizontal violence within the work setting can influence the quality of patient care. Approaches to the management of internal conflicts will be explored.

Obstetrical Emergencies
Mary Ellen Burke Sosa, RN, C-OB, M.S
This program will discuss the nursing management of the most common obstetrical emergencies such as
hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, prolapsed cord and maternal emergencies. The concept of anticipatory nursing care will be explored.

 

Acute and Chronic Renal Disease – A Nurse’s Perspective
Lisa Dumouchel, MSN, APRN
This program will address both acute and chronic renal disease, including pathophysiology, etiologies and current therapeutic modalities. The nursing care and management of acute and chronic renal disease will be explained.

 

Pediatric Respiratory Assessment: Easy as Breathing In and Out!
Michelle A. Beauchesne, DNSc, RN, CPNP, FNAP, FAANP
This session will provide an overview of respiratory assessment of the infant and child. Specific common conditions will be highlighted and current standards and guidelines will be shared.

 

Metabolic Syndrome: The Negative Aspects of Synergy
Christopher R. Keroack, MD
This program will focus on the definition, identification, significant symptoms of and treatment options for metabolic syndrome. The synergy of abdominal obesity, abnormal lipid profile, elevated blood pressure and fasting serum glucose levels in regard to components of health and disease states will be discussed.

This program will discuss spine anatomy and the most frequently seen pathologies and treatments available. Strategies for back injury prevention and conservative measures for treatment will be explored. Program will conclude with an overview of the current surgical modalities.

 

Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant – Who, When, What & How
Ruth Muller, RN, MSN, AOCNS
This program will discuss the hematologic diseases for which transplant is employed. Collection methods, pretransplant conditioning, administration as well as the common post-transplant complications, treatment strategies and nursing care will be addressed.

 

If I Only Had a Brain
Michael A. Frakes, RN, APRN, CCNS, CFRN, CTRN, CCRN
Proper post-event management can preserve at-risk brain tissue while mistakes can worsen outcomes
following a stroke or traumatic brain injury. Brain injury physiology, assessment, clinical best practices and commonly made errors in the care of patients with ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, and brain trauma will be highlighted.

 

Modulating Pain and Symptoms in End of Life Care – The Harmony of Nursing and Music Therapy

This presentation will address the types of pain and symptoms frequently experienced as individuals approach the end-of-life. Both conventional and
innovative approaches to pain management will be discussed, including the emerging body of research related to the efficacy of music therapy.

Debrief on the Pandemic

The 2009 H1N1 pandemic has become a household word, impacting healthcare workers and the general public. The Massachusetts response to H1N1 will be
presented. Assumptions about influenza, the course of the pandemic, and lessons learned will be discussed.

  • From the West: Take I-90-E. (the Mass. Turnpike East) to Exit 10 (Auburn). After the tollbooth, bear left at the fork. Take Rt. 290-E. Get off at Exit 16. Take a left at the bottom of the ramp (there is a light). At the 3rd set of lights (Major Taylor Boulevard), the DCU Center is on your left.

Parking

The preferred parking garage of the DCU Center is the Worcester Municipal Parking Garage located at 30 Major Taylor Boulevard on the corner of Major Taylor Boulevard and Central Street off of Exit 16 from Rt. 290. Bring your ticket to the conference for a stamp to receive a reduced parking rate for this garage only. The garage is open Monday through Sunday from 6 a.m. until 2 a.m.

Hotel Information

The MNA has secured several extra single and double rooms for $104, plus 14.5% tax, at the Hilton Garden Inn, Worcester, MA. It is adjacent to the DCU center. Parking is $8.95 per night. For reservations call 508.753.5700.

Chemical Sensitivity

Attendees are requested to avoid wearing scented personal products when attending the Fourth Annual MNA Clinical Nursing Conference. Scents may trigger responses in those with chemical sensitivity.

Program Cancellation

MNA reserves the right to change speakers or cancel programs for extenuating circumstances.

Refunds

Refund of the placeholder fee will be issued up to two weeks before the program date. If registrants do not attend the program or call to cancel, the fee will not be refunded.
