Caregivers and Community Activists Call for Protest Rally at Marian Manor's "End-of-the-Summer Steamer"

Group seeks commitment from management to not spend tax dollars interfering in workers' freedom to choose a union.

Workers at Marian Manor Nursing Home and their South Boston community supporters are planning a solidarity rally at the nursing home's "End-of-the-Summer Steamer" fundraiser scheduled for Marine Park in South Boston on Saturday September 8 from 3:30-5 p.m.

Employees at Marian Manor have been attempting to organize a union since August 2000 when a majority signed union membership cards and requested that management voluntarily begin talks with workers about pay and staffing. Management responded by aggressively interfering in the employees' freedom to choose a union.

Workers filed unfair labor practice charges that triggered an investigation by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). The board issued formal complaints on 68 charges that managers at Marian Manor were "interfering with, restraining, and coercing employees in the exercise of their rights" including discriminating against its employees to discourage union membership.

The labor board's complaint included that three union activists were fired and one employee was suspended in retaliation for their activities or support for the union. Most of this unlawful interference with the employees' freedom to choose has occurred during paid time, taking workers away from resident care. About 70 percent of the home's funding for the care of residents is from taxpayers.

Union supporters at Marian Manor have been subjected to unrelenting, coercive interference from management. The NLRB has filed complaints against management for 68 unfair labor practices in violation of federal labor laws, included unlawful terminations and discipline. Marian Manor's employees want to show management that there is broad community outrage about management interference in their freedom to organize and the nursing home's spending public health care dollars on union busting. Please show your support by joining SEIU Local 285 at the solidarity rally at Marine Park, in South Boston on September 8th from 3:30 to 5:00 PM! If you need more information about the workers' efforts to form a union or the rally, please contact SEIU Local 285 at 617.442.4100 x139.
