NNU Constitution & Summary of Affiliation Agreement

On July 16th the MNA Board of Directors endorsed the organization’s affiliation with the new national nurses union UAN-NNOC (United American Nurses – National Nurses Organizing Committee). The new RN "Super Union" is being founded by the unification of the MNA, the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee and the United American Nurses. The proposed constitution for the new national was drafted with input from a delegation of MNA leaders and it sets forth the objectives and governing structure of the new organization. It will also ensure a prominent MNA role and voice in the future of this important RN movement to reshape health care in America.

The next step is for the respective membership bodies of all three founding organization’s to ratify the new constitution which will occur over the next several months. The MNA membership vote on the national will take place at the Annual Business meeting, which will be held on Oct. 1st.

A copy of the new constitution can be found here.

In addition to the constitution, the three founding organizations have also approved a MNA board-endorsed affiliation agreement (subject to approval by MNA members at the Oct. 1st business meeting) that addresses a number of technical legal issues underpinning the new organization. Among the issues addressed in this document, not found in the constitution, is important language delineating the rights of MNA to disaffiliate from the national should we ever disagree with its policies. Below you can find a link to a detailed summary of key provisions of the affiliation agreement that deal with issues specific to MNA, which was prepared by MNA Legal Counsel Alan McDonald. The full affiliation document may be reviewed at the MNA office by any MNA member who wishes to do so by contacting Robin Gannon at 781.830.5724. A copy of the document will also be available to review at the upcoming regional meetings.
