Massachusetts House elects new speaker

Robert DeLeo

On Jan. 28, the Massachusetts House of Representatives elected Rep. Robert DeLeo (D-Winthrop) as new speaker. A native of Winthrop and a graduate of the Boston Latin School, Northeastern University and Suffolk Law School, DeLeo was first elected to the House in 1991. Under former Speaker Sal DiMasi, who resigned, DeLeo served as Ways & Means chair since 2005. His district includes Winthrop and parts of Revere.

DeLeo has named new committee chairs and given rank and file members their committee assignments. These appointments mark the most significant change in House leadership in a number of years. Of particular interest to the MNA are the new chair of the Public Health Committee, Rep. Jeffrey Sanchez (D-Boston), and the new chair of the Heath Care Financing Committee, Rep. Harriett Stanley (D-West Newbury). We look forward to working with Speaker DeLeo and his leadership team this session.
