Massachusetts hospitals
can afford to provide
safe patient limits for nurses

Several news accounts have stated that there will be nearly $300 million
in new money for the state’s hospitals from the proposed health care
reform settlement.

In addition, Massachusetts hospitals:

  • had nearly $1 billion in profits in 2005
  • had an additional $500 million in profits from the hospital networks
  • have completed or are working on expansion projects totaling another $500 million

This is good news – we should be investing in a strong health care system
but in doing so we must ensure patient safety and quality care are
paramount. To do this, there must be a limit on the number of patients
assigned to a nurse at one time.
