It’s Common Sense
When Nurses Are Assigned
Fewer
Patients,
You Get Better Care

Safe RN staffing protects patient safety.
Because nurses must care for too many patients at once, patients are suffering severe consequences in the form of preventable medical errors, avoidable complications, increased lengths of stay and readmissions. To provide you with the care you need, there must be a safe limit on the number of patients a nurse must care for at any one time.

It’s cost effective.
The journal Medical Care found minimum nurse staffing levels more cost effective than clot-busting medications for heart attacks and stroke and cancer screenings. The journal Health Affairs says there is an “unequivocal business case” for investing in increased nurse staffing.

Hospitals can afford the investment.
Massachusetts hospitals had nearly $1 billion in profits last year alone, and the hospital networks almost another $500 million. Massachusetts hospitals have also completed or are working on expansion projects totaling another half-billion dollars.
