Step 1 Must be filed within ____ days from the date the problem occurred. Must respond within _____ days of the filing or of the meeting at Step 1.
Step 2 Must appeal to Step 2 within ____ days after the employer replied to Step 1 or the date it was due. Must respond within _____ days of the filing or of the meeting at Step 2.
Step 3 Must appeal to Step 3 within ____ days after the employer replied to Step 2 or the date it was due. Must respond within _____ days of the filing or of the meeting at Step 3.
Arbitration The Union must appeal to arbitration within _____ days after management’s response at Step 3 or the date it was due.
  • The definition of "days" is determined by each contract as to whether they are calendar days or work days.
  • A grievance should be filed on to the next Step if the employer fails to respond by the due date at the previous Step.
  • The timeline for filing at Step 1 is measured from the date of the occurrence or from the date that the employee should have reasonably known about the circumstances giving rise to the grievance.
  • Contracts often also provide for a meeting/hearing to take place between the parties at Steps 1-3. There usually is a time frame for these meetings to occur specified in the procedure.
