Resources to Help You Through the Strike
The leadership of the UMMC/University bargaining unit understands that many of our members are worried about how they will manage during a strike. In response to your concerns, our bargaining unit, with the full support and backing of the entire Massachusetts Nurses Association organization, has assembled a variety of resources to support our members throughout the strike. This includes:
- Help Finding a Per Diem Job – we have already established relationships with three different temporary nurse employment agencies that are ready and willing to help you find work during the strike. The MNA will also provide help in writing a new resume, or will provide continuing education to get you ACLS certified.
- Food Bank – we have already begun planning for a food bank for nurses in need to help you provide for your families during the strike.
- Financial Relief – we have a strike fund that can provide you with a loan to help you in times of financial distress.
- Peer Support – we have established a strike office that will be operating 24/7 in case you need to come in and ask any question or just to meet with a colleague to share your feelings. We will also be holding weekly open meetings every Wednesday where you can come together with your colleagues to share your concerns and build your strength. The MNA also provides access to experts who can give you advice on securing COBRA benefits and unemployment.
Remember, you are not doing this alone. There are more than 800 of your colleagues who are in this with you and an organization of 23,000 nurses who are ready and willing to do whatever it takes to ensure we all win through this strike. The important thing is to stick together, and don’t be afraid to ask your union for help.
For more information at any time, visit the UMass page on the MNA web site at www.massnurses.org; and call or visit the MNA Strike Headquarters, 365 Shrewsbury St, Worcester, 508-756-5800.
