Skilled nurses should be respected
KATHLYN M. LOGAN, R.N., Spencer
At a time when the management team of UMass Memorial
Medical Center is trying to decimate the contract for the registered
nurses employed at the university campus, an article (Sunday Telegram,
April 9) highlighted the complex and sophisticated care provided
there and the life-saving role of the nurses.
Without skilled nurses working in a safe environment,
shiny new buildings and state-of-art technology areworthless. Although
the hospital has doubled the size of the emergency room, it has
not added any staff.
The current contract proposals are threatening to
drive our staff away to trauma centers, where nurses can be treated
with respect and practice every day without fear of harming their
patients.
If UMass Memorial wants to celebrate Level 1 trauma
service, then it needs to respect its nurses and give them the resources
they need to take care of their patients.
Top 10 medical centers retain, recruit and respect
their nurses; they do not try to force them away.
