City deserves best nursing care

I am a staff nurse at UMass Memorial Medical Center, on 7-East. As you know, we are in the midst of negotiations and they are stalled. I love being a nurse. I have worked at UMass for 18 years. I love my patients. I chose this profession knowing the holiday, weekend and shift rotations. I keep myself current, and give 110 percent when I am at work. A nurse is not a nurse. I work in oncology. I want my patients to do well, and they know it. I educate, medicate and support patients and their families. After reading management’s plan to replace us, if needed, with agency nurses — how very scary — I really feel management does not know what we are doing at the bedside. Why don’t they start asking our patients, whom we fight for every single day, what they think we are worth? This isn’t about money — it’s far deeper than that. Worcester deserves the best at their bedside and the best deserves to be retained as such. Yes, we care for our patients like family, not because that is UMass’ slogan, but because that is what we do best.

LAURIE BUDNICK, R.N.
