Yet another research study clearly demonstrates a link between unsafe registered nurse-to-patient ratios and negative patient outcomes - this time in intensive care units. See the story below from Nurse.com. The study shows that ratios of one nurse to three patients leads to an increase in post-operative complications. Many Massachusetts ICU nurses find themselves assigned three patients on a regular basis (an assignment of four patients is not uncommon). The solution is simple, pass legislation that takes the decision making out of hospital administrators hands. Pass HB 1186, the safe staffing bill, which would mandate safe nurse-to-patient ratios on all hospital floors.
