If You Receive A Ballot in the mail, The MNA
is Urging You To Vote For The Second Option And Keep Your Money: Check
The Box That Reads:
I Vote Not To Dissolve District
5, Inc.
Dear Colleague:
First, let us apologize for the recent inappropriate
actions of members of the District 5 Board of Directors. It
appears that members of the District 5 Board are unwilling to
honor the 3,105 members who voted by an overwhelming 83% to leave
the ANA.
Instead, the District 5 Board of Directors, in
conjunction with a disgruntled minority of District 5 members
who were behind efforts to stop disaffiliation from the ANA,
have embarked on an action that is an affront to all MNA members
and, particularly, those MNA members represented for collective
bargaining, by promoting a new ANA organization in Massachusetts. They
want to accomplish this by dissolving District 5 and pilfering
more than $500,000 in dues money from the District 5 treasury.
You may have received a letter and ballot in the
mail from District 5, which asks you to cast a vote to allow
the Board of Directors of District 5 to be dissolved, and for
the funds currently in the District 5 treasury to be transferred
to the proposed ANA affiliate organization, the Massachusetts
Association of Registered Nurses — VOTE NO.
The MNA has not sanctioned this vote and, in fact,
is taking appropriate legal steps to oppose this action. However,
pending legal action, we advise concerned members of District
5 to take the time and vote against this proposal. Cast
your vote to stop this. Vote for the second option, which
reads, "I vote not to dissolve District 5, Inc., MNA." This
is a vote to keep District 5 intact and to prevent them from
taking your dues money.
This is your hard-earned dues money that could
and should be used to promote your professional practice by supporting
and fighting for your issues and concerns, such as passing legislation
to ensure safe staffing for all nurses and patients.
Instead, they want to take your money to fund an
ANA organization using your dues.
On March 24th, and again through a court-supervised
and approved mail ballot process that was certified on April
30th, the membership of the MNA cast an overwhelming 83%
vote in favor of disaffiliation. While some may not be
happy with that result, it does not give them the right to engage
in a scheme to use the majority's funds to set up an alternative
organization.
N.B., If you have not received a ballot and were
a District 5 member in good standing on May 15, 2001, please
call Robin LeCain at the MNA at 800.882.2056, x724 or email rlecain@mnarn.org or
fax at 781.821.4445.
This behavior clearly underscores why disaffiliation
was necessary.
Sincerely,
The MNA Board of Directors:
