Mass. Congressional Delegation Sends Letter To Brockton CEO Urging
Settlement of Nurses' Strike
As the Brockton Hospital Nurses' strike drags on, the nurses have
received another round of support from some the state's top political
figures. This week, the entire Massachusetts Congressional Delegation
cosigned a letter to Brockton CEO Norman Goodman calling upon hospital
management to take the initiative to reach a settlement addressing
the nurses' concerns over staffing and quality of care issues. This
letter follows a similar letter sent to Mr. Goodman from Senator
President Thomas Birmingham and yet another by Massachusetts Senators
Kennedy and Kerry, which was mailed three weeks ago.

Congress of the United States
Washington, DC 20515
July 23, 2001
Mr. Norman B. Goodman
President and Chief Executive Officer
Brockton Hospital
680 Centre St.
Brockton, MA 02302
Dear Mr. Goodman:
We are writing to urge you to help redouble efforts to resolve the
ongoing contract dispute between Brockton Hospital and its registered
nurses. We join with many others throughout the community to respectfully
request a renewal of good-faith negotiations with the nurses' union.
Both management and the nurses clearly are dedicated to providing
the highest possible level of health care to their patients. Accordingly,
it is critical to address the impact of staffing constraints and
related compensation issues if the hospital is to continue to meet
these quality of care standards.
We are also particularly concerned about the impact of the strike
on the capacity of other Massachusetts hospitals to absorb additional
patient services during the course of this dispute. A prompt and
equitable resolution of the strike would benefit the hospital, its
employees and all who depend on its services.
Toward these ends, we ant to convey our hope that the shared commitment
of all parties to patient care provides constructive common ground
- and to urge you to do all that you can to seek a fair and expedited
resolution to this labor dispute.
As always, thank you for consideration of our concerns.
Sincerely,
Richard Neal
William Delahunt
Barney Frank
James McGovern
