2001 MNA Leader Fellows Program

The application deadline for the 2001 MNA Leader Fellows Program has been extended to November 15. Don't miss this important opportunity to enhance your leadership ability.

We look to leaders to assist us with thinking out of the box; collaborating more effectively with groups with whom we have not worked closely in the past and framing the possibilities, issues, and pathways as we move forward. Leaders encourage us to stretch. In the process of reaching, we often learn that we are capable of wonderful things we never believed possible.

These remain turbulent times. Rapid changes in health care and nursing delivery systems continue to pose challenges for nurses and nursing. Capitalizing on the opportunities these challenges provide requires leadership. Some of us like Barry Adams, the St. Vincent Hospital nurses or Karen Daley make very visible statements that demonstrate personal courage and a keen sense of professional clarity. Others of us act in ways that are considerably less visible but are equally courageous and keenly centered professionally. In either case, when acting in this way, we are leaders.

In an effort to identify and nurture leaders among us, the association established the MNA Leader Fellows Program in 1998. The program includes several sessions designed to explore leadership and change, provide opportunities to self-assess leader competencies, develop and enhance communication and presentation skills, and support the initiation of applied projects in each Leader Fellow's selected area of interest. A stipend of $1,000 is awarded to each fellow.

In 1998, Ellen Vangel-Brousseau and Linda Watson were named as District 2 Leader Fellows. Kristin Robbins and Jane Thornton were selected from District 5. In 1999, Susan Morris Smith and Theresa Murphy represented District 2 and Marilyn Nalbach and Anne Rundle, District 5. The 2000 Leader Fellows include: Kathlyn Logan, District 2; Claudia Ellis, District 3 and Sharon McCollum and Marie Tobin, District 5. Contact Donna Mae Donahue, MNA staff liaison, at 800.882.2056, x739 to network to any of the leader fellows.
