Comment:
"Nursing has been my passion. I have been involved with the American Nurses' and State organizations since 1968. I bring perspective and commitment to the mission of the Association. I feel it is essential for the Association to recommit to multipurpose agenda that meets the needs of all registered nurses in the practice, education, research and legislation domains. Now is the time for nurses to speak in one voice presenting a powerful presence in district, state & national health policy. I have the leadership skills to fulfill the role of Vice President of the Massachusetts Nurses Association."

Past Offices:
Director, Cabinet for Labor Relations; Vice Chair, Institute for Collective Bargaining; Task Force on Nurse Staffing; Task Force on Health & Safety.

Comment:
"The MNA is an effective organization representing nurses' concerns in contracts, legislative, regulatory, political and public areas. As the corporate assault on healthcare escalates – we face crises where compromise is not a solution. As professionals we must demand decision-making power. Staffing legislation, regulatory equal accountability for all nurses – (for those that design and implement systems of care as well as those forced to work in that scheme) – and dynamically embracing the role of patient advocate are necessary components of a successful strategy. With your vote, I will work vigorously with you and for you in whatever venue offers solutions to protect nurses, our profession and our patients."

Margaret T. Barry

Comment:
"There is strength in unity and strength is needed in these troubled times in health care. A strong professional organization means a strong national voice for all nurses. MNA needs the resources and power of ANA to help shape nursing in Massachusetts. I will work toward bringing about changes needed to achieve unity and harmony among members. As treasurer, I will work the Finance Committee to achieve a balanced budget and will keep members informed as to the financial status of the organization. I believe I have the necessary qualifications to once again serve as your Treasurer."

Comment:
"I am running for the Board of Directors to advocate for staff nurses throughout the state. I have, and continue to, practice nursing at the staff nurse level for the past 36 years. The changes in nursing are immense, the issues complex, and solutions evasive. I can bring a strong understanding of the acute issues facing staff nurses to the table at the state level to work for solutions. With your vote I will be an advocate for the staff nurses of Massachusetts as a member of the Board of Directors of MNA."

"There's a revolution in nursing today and its long overdue. Nurses are challenging
corporate health care. Heroes like Barry Adams have exposed system inequities and give us the Whistleblower Law. Staff nurses are now taking hold of their own profession and choosing their own leaders.
The past has never been our potential. Now is the time to move forward, claim our rights and the power to use those rights. A vote for staff nurses in these positions is opening an opportunity for your voice to be heard. I welcome the opportunity to put my experience and vision to work for you."

I have experience at all levels – local, district, and at the ANA House of Delegates. Comment:
"My experience as a registered nurse has confirmed what I have long believed; staff nurses are the foundation of the American healthcare system. Our work is essential to this society. The healthcare industry knows this. I believe this is why nurses are subjected to such attempts to control and exploit us.
The MNA staff and membership have been a strong support for me in my work as a nurse. Now, I would like to give something back. If elected, I will continue to speak loudly on behalf of nurses who provide direct patient care."

"As a founding member of the only Nursing Congress on Health and Safety in our country, my goals would be to encourage the formation of Health and Safety Congresses in each state. Since becoming disabled from occupational latex allergy and chemical exposure in 1994, I have been active in increasing public awareness of many health and safety issues, and responsibilities of the Board of Registration in Nursing in addressing safe care issues. Nurses have become a strong catalyst for change, especially here in Massachusetts. Comment:
"Today nurses need to be cognizant of the ethical conflicts that arise within a managed care system. A balanced perspective: ethical, financial, humanistic and scientific is required while delivering quality health care. My goal is to further the discussion of ethical principles, and opinions about the responsibility of the profession of nursing toward achieving a balanced approach to the provision of health care for all. I have supported the Patient Self-Determination Act, by educating colleagues, and publishing on the subject. I am currently active in the Boston Consortium for Compassionate Care for the Dying; and am the co-chair of my institution's Ethics Advisory Committee."

Past Offices: Delegate; Unit 7 Executive Board, Member; Chair, Unit 7; AIDS Committee; Task Force for HIV Infected Practitioners.

Comment:
"The greatest challenge facing the nursing profession is learning to listen to one another. We are a diverse and powerful group with a wealth of knowledge and ideas but we loose power by not embracing the different and sometimes conflicting views that are expressed. Nursing is the key component in the health care delivery system and could be the most powerful. Nurses must maintain control over practice and demonstrate that nursing care is critical for a healthy country. We must remain focused on the needs of all our nurse members, nurses as a whole and the patients and populations that we serve."

Comment:
"I have been a nurse for thirty-five years and have seen and lived through many changes in the profession. I believe that nurses today must be attentive and proactive in order to hold on to their professional standards and professional identity in this ever-changing health care industry. I have worked in the field of addictions for twenty-five years and have served as an advocate for our own colleagues who are struggling with this disease. I ask for your vote for this opportunity to represent you as a delegate. "

"I believe that my diverse nursing experience; MNA activities on the state and district level, and dedication to best practice providing a firm foundation from which I, as a Delegate, can represent the MNA membership. I intend to continue confronting safety, access, and quality health care system issues, critical to nurses in all delivery settings, with future focused initiative collaboration, analytical inquiry, education, and legislation. Comment:
Working as a home care nurse and a clinical instructor in a
wide variety of settings, I see first hand the immense challenges and
opportunities facing nursing practice, education and health care
delivery. To continue serving the MNA membership as a second-term ANA
delegate would be a privilege which I view as an extension of my
community-based and profession-based advocacy work to positively
impact both patient care and nursing practice issues. Our patients and the nursing community both need strong and enthusiastic nursing voices to be heard with respect in the work that is done to shape nursing and health policy. I pledge to listen attentively to my patients and colleagues and use my voice and actions to be an effective ANA delegate.

Comment:
"I am concerned for my profession and do not wish to see it diluted or compromised in any way. Since I am now retired, I can now devote even more time to support sound health care reform issues and share such information with my colleagues. I articulate concerns for patient safety and care. I believe in legal and labor process that help enable nursing care in this time of political chaos and fiduciary upheaval in the health care arena. I wish to confer a more stable and autonomous climate in our profession for present and future generation of nurses. I feel that I can accomplish this by serving as a delegate and/or director."

Comment:
"MNA has played an exemplary role within the nursing profession nationally – through pioneering work in such areas as whistleblower protection, staffing standards and organizing victories, and through advocating for its positions on a national level. For instance, because of MNA's hard work, ANA now has a clear, public position advocating single-payer health care.
I am proud to be a member of the MNA – an organization that advocates for our profession on all fronts. I would be proud to continue serving as an MNA delegate at a time when the profession faces critical economic, practice, policy & organizational challenges."

Comment:
Nursing practice and health care remain in an ever-deepening crisis. Financial considerations (and, all too often, "profiteering") consistently checkmate efforts to insure the 44 million Americans currently uninsured. Similarly, "cost concerns" diminish nursing staffing, both endangering patient safety and destroying nurse satisfaction. ANA must be relentless in fighting the corporatization of health care and in reasserting the primacy of the patient and his/her needs. Without such strong national advocacy, attracting outstanding women and men to our profession (and retaining them) will be impossible. The Massachusetts delegation has consistently led fellow House of Delegates members to join this struggle for the preservation of nursing – to identify the forces in health care whose self-interest subverts quality patient care and to organize to overcome them. We must continue to inspire our colleagues nationwide.

I believe I can contribute my knowledge, skills, and passion for nursing to the MNA delegation and the ANA governing process. Thank you very much for your support and your vote."

Our image, as reputable caregivers, has become increasingly visible, thanks to MNA. We RN's must be a motivating factor for change in healthcare. Comment:
"The health care system is being influenced by changes in the reimbursement of services. Many advanced practice nurses are being called upon to increase their productivity at a time when many patients have complex health problems. In addition, many nurses are being required to care for many more acutely ill patients than in the past. Nursing as a united group needs to address the care of patient and the practice of nursing and advanced practice nurses in the current health care system. This work can be accomplished through participation in the MNA and as a delegate to the ANA."

Comment:
"I am a member of MNA's Unit 7, Vice Chair of Nurse Plan, and a member of the Nurse Plan Board of Directors. As a nurse paralegal and bargaining unit representative, I am keenly aware of the challenges facing both individual nurses and our profession. I appeared on "60 Minutes II – Unsafe Haven" with Ed Bradley. I documented unsafe conditions for the patients and staff of Charter Corp. Charter was one of the largest for-profit psychiatric care providers in the country. After the show aired, Charter filed for bankruptcy. I testified about unsafe conditions at Bournwood Hospital. If re-elected I will continue to advocate for nurses and the well being of our patients."

Comment:
"Out of the St. Vincent victory came the phrase "we are at the beginning of a revolution in nursing". It is crucial to build on this momentum as we fight the annihilation of the profession(s) and support a progressive agenda capable of taking on the healthcare industry. Comment:
"I have been a bargaining unit member for over 20 years at the bedside as a staff nurse in acute care. I have watched the patients become sicker, the nurses over-extended and the systems change to make all patient care increasingly difficult. Nurses have been protected by MNA and Labor Relations in keeping their jobs, getting fair and good contracts and support when their environments became toxic. MNA is a proud organization and I wish to serve in that continued work to benefit the MNA nurses as well as all the nurses in the state."

"I have been a member and supporter of MNA for 28 years. Four years ago, I became a member of the MNA Committee at Brigham & Women's Hospital. I believe strongly in the collective bargaining process and have witnessed many positive changes brought about through the strength and unity of nurses.
I consider myself a nurse activist, and if elected to the Cabinet on Labor Relations, I will work to strengthen the role of nurses in defining and protecting our professional practice, securing a sound economic future and influencing the political agenda as it relates to our profession."

"Changes are not new to staff nurses. We've learned to expect them, negotiate alternatives, remaining firm in our commitment to our patients, profession and ourselves. MNA is exploring the impact of disaffiliation with the American Nurses Association. Having served MNA at the local, state and national level, I believe that I bring a broad perspective to the process. I'd appreciate your vote."
