Communicating with elected officials: Democracy in action
Writing letters or e-mail messages to the Governor or to your state
representative, state senator or Congressional delegation is a very
effective way to put your concerns into an arena for positive concrete
action. Democracy is not a spectator sport and works best when you
take a few moments to express your convictions.
When addressing your letter use the proper titles:
- The Governor is His Excellency A. Paul Cellucci
- The Lieutenant Governor is The Honorable Lieutenant Governor
Mary Jane Swift.
- Your state senator, state representative, U.S. Senator or U.S.
Congressman is addressed as "The Honorable."
The salutations are: "Dear Governor, Senator, Congressman…"
- Address:
State House Boston, MA 02133
- State House Telephone Numbers:
Senator Lobby (617) 722-1455 and
House of Representatives Lobby (617) 722-2800.
When writing to the governor, your representative
or senator:
1. Identify yourself as a nurse constituent
2. Make reference to the bill of your concern (use
bill numbers and complete titles – call Department of Legislation
if you are unsure).
3. Include a brief and legible statement of the
reasons for your support/opposition/concern/recommended changes.
4. When possible, add empirical, clinical, personal
or research examples.
5. Ask for a response.
6. Include a gracious "thank you" and your complete
name, title, organizational membership, address and telephone number.
