ANA Gearing up for National Nurses Week
The American Nurses Association, along with its 53 constituent
associations, is gearing up to celebrate the accomplishments and
contributions of over 2 million registered nurses during National
Nurses Week, May 6-12.
Using the theme "Nurses - Keeping the Care in Health Care," the
ANA and its constituent associations will join nurses across the
nation in highlighting the diverse ways in which registered nurses,
the largest health care profession, are working to improve health
care. Listed as the most honest profession among Americans by Gallup's
1999 "Honesty and Ethics" poll, nursing continues to be an admirable
profession. From bedside nursing in hospitals and long term care
facilities to the halls of research institutions, state legislatures,
and Congress, the depth and breadth of the nursing profession is
meeting the expanding health care needs of American society.
To assist nurses and others across the country in planning celebration
activities, ANA offers a promotional kit filled with ideas and suggestion
for observing National Nurses Week. By visiting the ANA website,
www.nursingworld.org/pressrel/nnw, one can view the history of National
Nurses Week, find celebration suggestions, receive tips for encouraging
state and community recognition, and gain access to a variety of
promotional items which will bring the celebration of National Nurses
Week to the forefront. In addition to our website, information is
also available via our ‘fax on demand' system which can be access
by calling 1-800-349-9909 and entering document number 5612.
National Nurses Week is celebrated annually beginning on May 6
in recognition of National Nurses Day and ending on May 12, the
birthday of Florence Nightingale, founder of nursing as a modern
profession. During this week, registered nurses across the United
States will be honored by participating or hosting a variety of
events such as rallies, community health screenings, childhood immunization
publicity efforts, dinners, receptions, hospital events, etc. These
public events will be held to celebrate the contributions that nurses
make to the community.
