Massachusetts Nurses Issue "Call to Arms" in Legal Battle with BORN

The case of Barry Adams' fight for a nurse's right to speak on behalf of his/her patients has garnered national media coverage for the past three years, and raised the level of awareness of the importance of nursing's role in our evolving healthcare systems.  Presently, nurses in Massachusetts are facing the biggest battle yet in reforming their own Board of Nursing. They have made a decision to surround Barry with support in his most recent decision to move through the legal labyrinth.  The success of his legal battle would result in changes necessary to prevent the Massachusetts BORN from ever unjustly punishing any staff nurse again, while allowing nurses in administration and management to walk away from accountability.

A legal team, with a strong background in state law and advocacy, is now representing Barry in an attempt to, again, set new precedents in law and public policy that affect patients and staff nurses, and this action has the potential to affect staff nurses nationwide.

A group of individual nurses in Massachusetts are setting up a legal fund for Barry Adams. There is an urgent need for financial support for this battle.  Much must be done before Nov. 10.  If the BORN maintains its tradition of questionable conduct, the battle may drag on.

Therefore, nurses in Massachusetts are putting out a “Call to Arms” for all of our colleagues across the country.  This is a chance for all nurses to be involved and support one of our own.

ACTION ALERT
Here’s What You Can Do

  • 1.  Please pass this message on to all nurses, nursing lists, health lists and union lists.  Ask all to participate.
  • 2.  Make a personal donation to the legal fund (any size donation is needed).
  • 3.  Organize a drive in your hospital, nursing home or nursing agency.  Include non-nurses who support what we do.
  •  We need to reach all nurses.Nurses on the Internet and those who are not. Be creative!
  • 4.  Continue to inform colleagues of the far- reaching implications of what is occurring in Massachusetts.
