Singing Their Praises: One Woman's View on the Difference Nurses Make
Make
Multiple Grammy-award-winning singer, actress, and best-selling author Patti LaBelle has become almost as well-known for her support of social causes as for her chart-topping music. In recent years, she has worked tirelessly to raise awareness about AIDS, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, cancer, and foster care. She is also the author of Don’t Block the Blessings, a book that chronicles her personal story of emotional survival following traumatic family events and losses. Within a 10-year period, Ms. LaBelle lost her mother, three sisters, and her best friend to diabetes and cancer. Also a diabetic, Ms. LaBelle has been pro-active in the fight against the very disease that claimed her dear mother’s life. She has served as a spokeswoman for the National Medical Association, which administers a scholarship in her name, the National Minority AIDS Council’s “Live Long, Sugar” campaign, the American Diabetes Association and the Susan G. Komen Foundation. She is an inspirational speaker who shares a powerful message of hope for nurses and patients alike. On May 6th she will share her insights and experiences regarding the impact nurses made on her own family’s care, and by extension, the difference that nurses can make for all patients.

Suzanne Gordon
Author: Safety in Numbers: Nurse-to-Patient Ratios and the Future of Health Care
Suzanne Gordon is an award-winning journalist and author of seven books on nursing including Life Support, Nursing Against the Odds and co-authur of From Silence to Voice. Her forthcoming book, Safety in Numbers: Nurse-to-Patient Ratios and the Future of Health Care will be published by Cornell University Press in April 2008. Safety in Numbers is the first book to examine the arguments for and against ratios. Utilizing surveys, data, interviews and other original research, Gordon and her co-authors weight the costs benefits and effectiveness of ratios in California and Victoria Australia, the two places where RN staffing levels have been regulated by law. On May 6 Gordon will discuss her findings and provide insight into what nurses in Massachusetts can do to win their own fight for safe patient limits. Read more about Suzanne Gordon. |

Nurses Day Rally for Safe Patient Limits
Join hundreds of nurses and patient advocates who will culminate our celebration of National Nurses Day with a rally in front of the Massachusetts State House to call for legislative action on H. 2059, legislation to set safe patient limits for safe patient care. We need to raise our collective voices to let the legislature know that if they support nurses and quality patient care, they need to provide safe limits on the number of patients nurses care for at one time. You don't need to attend the Hynes Convention Center event to attend the rally. All nurses, nursing students, and supporters of nurses are encouraged to come to the rally. Remember, there is safety in numbers, and safe patient limits save patients' lives. |
