Featured Speakers
 
Lucian Leape, MD, the keynote speaker for Friday is a health policy analyst whose research has focused on error prevention & appropriateness of care. He is a leading  advocate of the nonpunitive systems approach to the prevention of medical error. Dr. Leape is a member of the board of directors of the National Patient Safety Foundation and the Institute of Medicine Quality of Care in America committee which recently released its report, “To Err is Human.” He is the author of over 180 medical articles, book chapters and monographs.

 
Vera Chernecki, RN, a plenary speaker, is a registered nurse (retired). She was president of the Mannitoba Nurses’ Union from 1981-1998. Under Vera’s stewardship, the Mannitba Nurses’ Union rose to national prominence as a defender of the nursing profession and the health care system. During the 1990’s, she led the fight in Mannitoba against the government’s health care reform plans.
Congressman James McGovern
Currently serving his second term in Congress,  McGovern was elected by his New England colleagues of the House Democratic Leadership team as a Regional Whip.   In Congress, McGovern has led the fight to provide adequate health care, including home health care; and he has fought to preserve and strengthen Social Security. McGovern played a key role in the resoulation of the St. Vincent Nursing Strike.
Rachel Spector, 
PhD, RN, FAAN 
Friday’s second plenary, is an associate professor of nursing at Boston College with a focus on developing and teaching models of care in multicultural populations.  Author of the book, Cultural Diversity in Health and Illness, Rachel has over 26 years of experience in research and teaching and has lectured throughout the country.
She is the president of the Transcultural Nursing Society.
